Red Wings prospect Taro Hirose was handed a two game suspension earlier today after he gave Cole Guttman of the Rockford Ice Hogs an awful slash. This slash resulted in Guttman expecting to miss three to four weeks of playing time due to an upper body injury.

The 27-year-old undrafted left winger has spent the bulk of his career in pro hockey with the Red Wings AHL affiliate the Grand Rapid Griffins. He has not played this season with the Red Wings and even being with the organization for five seasons, he is only played 60 NHL games, scoring four goals with 16 assists for 20 points and as a brutal -17.

Prior to his professional career he was with the Michigan State Spartans from 2016 till 2019. He has several accolades attached to his name including the big 10 scoring champion in 2019 and he was also a finalist for the Hobey Baker Award.

Through 50 AHL games this season, Hirose has scored nine goals, added 26 assists for 35 points.

Many would expect with those kinds of accolades he would be better performing with the Red Wings as the team continues to find its way into the playoff picture. It seems clear that he will need more time before he becomes a full time regular with the Red Wings.
