Mike Matheson Reveals His Future in Montreal After Being Traded by the Penguins

Back in 2022, the Pittsburgh Penguins traded veteran defenseman Mike Matheson to the Montreal Canadiens, and over the following three seasons, he's been highly effective with his new team.

The Quebec native has put up 34, 62 and 31 points over his three seasons with Montreal, and with the team now taking strides to becoming genuine Stanley Cup Playoffs contenders, he's found a home with his hometown team.

With training camp set to open in the coming days, players are filtering back to Montreal, starting with their annual golf day that allowed media to question some of the players ahead of 2025/26.

Obviously, the future of Matheson came up, and when asked, the 31-year old expressed just how much he wants to continue playing in Montreal, as he's become a key piece of this blue line.

At 31-years of age, Matheson brings the type of experience and leadership that this blue line desperately needs, and with the team led by so much youth, keeping Matheson in Montreal moving forward is the best possible move for GM Kent Hughes and the Canadiens.

This season, Matheson will be owed $4.875 million by the Canadiens after he signed a eight-year deal back in 2018/19, and will then become a UFA in the summer of 2026, so while he may not get a huge pay rise from the Canadiens, it makes sense for both parties to keep him on moving forward.
