Controversy sparks after Matt Rempe rocks Trevor Van Riemsdyk
Tonight, the Washington Capitals are in a do-or-die situation as they aim to claw back against the New York Rangers in Game 3 of the series, trailing two games to none. Early on, the Capitals caught a break when Rangers' forward Matt Rempe was sent to the penalty box for interference.
The call came after a hit on Capitals defenseman
Trevor Van Riemsdyk, shortly after he had dished off the puck. While the hit appeared mostly clean, the officials deemed it late, slapping Rempe with a minor penalty.
NHL journalist Shayna Goldman was quick to share video clips of the incident from various angles on X, sparking debate among fans. The consensus seemed to tilt towards the hit being legal.
However, a Rangers fan pointed out that while the call could be seen as borderline, it's possible the officials are keeping a particularly close eye on Rempe. The rookie has gained some notoriety for his robust style of play, having been thrown out of games twice this season for questionable hits, one of which led to a four-game suspension.
In a technical sense you could argue it's a penalty, but given how little they call those types of things, you have to wonder if maybe they're treating Matt Rempe differently
With the Rangers holding a 3-1 lead as the teams head into the second intermission, the tension is palpable. Keep an eye on how Rempe and his team handle the spotlight and pressure as the game unfolds.
