The Erik Karlsson era officially came to a close with the San Jose Sharks this past offseason when he was traded to the Pittsburgh Penguins in a blockbuster 3-team deal. The Penguins sent goaltender Casey DeSmith and defenseman Jeff Petry to the Habs, who, in turn, traded Mike Hoffman to the Sharks.

Despite Karlsson's impressive 101-point performance with the Sharks last season, his first year with the Penguins hasn't matched that pace. With six goals and 16 assists in 30 games, he's currently on track for 60 points.

While 60 points would be commendable for most defensemen, it falls short of the expectations set by the bold trade executed by Penguins president of hockey operations Kyle Dubas. According to Pittsburgh Hockey Now's Dan Kingerski, there's speculation that the Penguins might consider trading Karlsson.

"He's here to win, and if that's not going to happen, both sides could find a quick and amicable parting," wrote Kingerski. "Dubas could surely recoup the first and second-round picks the Penguins gave up in the deal, if not more, and even come out ahead. However, next summer is the more likely timeframe for that trade because of Karlsson's salary."

Currently in the middle of his eight-year, $11.5 million AAV contract, Karlsson's future with the Penguins remains uncertain.
