Capitals Assistant Coach Emerges as Frontrunner to Take Over the Penguins Bench
An assistant coach of the Washington Capitals emerged as a potential frontrunner to take over the Pittsburgh Penguins' bench after Mike Sullivan's dismissal.
The Washington Capitals just had a massive bounce-back season. After getting swept from last year's playoffs by the New York Rangers, the Capitals made significant acquisitions and changes over the summer, and finished the 2024-25 season at the top of the Eastern Conference.
Now, after beating the Montreal Canadiens in five games, the Caps will face elimination tonight against the Carolina Hurricanes.
This means that players could be holding their end-of-season media availability as soon as tomorrow, marking the start of another crucial offseason in Washington.
According to multiple reports, the team could be forced to make some coaching changes after rumors suggested they could lose Mitch Love, their assistant coach.
Indeed, he's receiving interest from a few NHL organizations, and it could all go down soon after the end of the season.
David Pagnotta and Pierre LeBrun both confirmed the news that the Penguins could be interested:

In a recent podcast interview, Love shared some details on himself, about his playing career and how the game evolved:
"I wasn't a great player. I was a stay-at-home defenceman that tried to play honestly and protect my teammates. I had to find a certain skill set that I felt allowed me to survive in terms of the league at that time."
"I was trying to get noticed as a young player, but the game has changed and probably in the right way. I wasn't just going to fight to fight. It was a momentum-changing moment, or it was a chance to stick up for my teammates. There's a certain skill and hockey IQ thing that comes along with that."
"The game has evolved and as a coach you've got to evolve. You learn different things from players and what makes them tick. Every player is different, what they need in terms of tutelage from a coach, and the relationship component between players and coach."
"It's really, really changed. I take a lot of pride in being a good team guy, whether it's for the staff or for the players."
Stay tuned for all the developments related to the Penguins' coaching search.
