Sidney Crosby chirped Mitch Marner’s saucer pass, and Team Canada Olympics chatter instantly turned spicy.
It was the kind of between-periods clip that lives forever, because the line was too perfect.
Asked about Marner’s filthy feed, Crosby deadpanned.
“I actually didn’t know he could land the sauce in a tight window like that.”

That is not praise, that is a captain’s grin with the blade out.
Marner is a world-class playmaker, so the joke lands because everyone knows Sid is watching every detail.

The timing matters, too, because Crosby just got handed the C for Team Canada at Milano Cortina 2026.
When the room has Sidney Crosby as captain, the standard is loud even when he’s laughing.

Leafs fans will get a kick out of that and laugh, because Marner takes heat in Toronto even when he’s a member of the Golden Knights now.
But this is what leadership looks like in a short tournament, keep it loose, keep it sharp, and keep everyone honest.
Crosby is not some ceremonial choice right now, he’s still producing, sitting at 27-32-59 in 56 games for Pittsburgh.
Marner is not exactly limping into this spotlight either, putting up 16-42-58 this season with Vegas.
That’s why the chirp hits, because it’s two high-end brains speaking the same language.
If you’re Marner, you take it as a compliment wrapped in a challenge, do it again, but cleaner, but faster.
If you’re everyone else, you hear the message, nobody coasts, not even on a “fun” pass.
And with Connor McDavid and Cale Makar wearing A’s, the internal pace has been ruthless from the first practice.
