Former Penguins Defensemen Signs New Contract Ahead of Opening Night

Ahead of the 2025-26 season, former Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Matt Grzelcyk has officially secured himself a spot in the NHL.
With training camp wrapped up for almost every team in the NHL each team is making their last minute additions and changes to their roster for opening night.
This means, making final decisions on players who were training camp invites which for the Chicago Blackhawks included former Pittsburgh Penguin Matt Grzelcyk.
Grzelcyk entered free agency expecting to have a healthy market and sign with a team on a guaranteed contract for this season and potentially even end up with a contender.
Unfortunately, that did not happen leaving Grzelcyk forced to sign a PTO with the Blackhawks who were one of the bottom feeders in the NHL last season.
This meant that Grzelcyk had to prove he belonged on an NHL roster and now Blackhawks GM Kyle Davidson announced that Grzelcyk will be sticking around.
Chicago Blackhawks Sign Former Penguin Matt Grzelcyk To A One-Year Deal
According to multiple reports, the Blackhawks will be keeping Grzelcyk as he signs a guaranteed one-year deal with the Chicago Blackhawks.
Grzelcyk, 31, played all 82 games with the Pittsburgh Penguins last season and put up a respectable 40 points the most of his career.
Before his time in Pittsburgh, Grzelcyk was mostly relied on for his defensive abilities and good passing during his eight seasons with the Boston Bruins.
He will now bring his veteran presence and leadership to another young group in Chicago who have several up and coming star defensemen.
