The Penguins need to utilize their salary cap space somehow this off-season, and now they've done just that, with the full details of the Matt Dumba trade official as the Penguins take on his salary cap hit to land an intriguing future asset.
Things have been relatively quiet in the NHL over the past week, but on Thursday, a shocking deal came together for the Pittsburgh Penguins when it was announced on social media that the team would be acquiring veteran defenseman Matt Dumba from the Dallas Stars.
The move came out of absolutely nowhere, and for Pittsburgh, it was one where they utilized their salary cap space to get a future asset in return, and now, we know exactly what that asset is.
According to Elliotte Friedman, the deal was delayed a little as one player in the deal needed to be notified, but now we know that this is what the deal will look like for both Pittsburgh and Dallas.
Pittsburgh receives: D Matt Dumba (no salary retained), 2028 second-round pick.
On paper, it's a deal that works for both teams, as Pittsburgh use their cap space to take on salary while receiving an asset in return while Dallas shed some much needed space to negotiate with players up for extensions or even looking to acquire other players.
Now, the Penguins also have a player in Dumba they could potentially ship out for another asset with retained salary, and with the speculation surrounding Erik Karlsson and Rickard Rakell, if Kyle Dubas and the organization play their cards right, they could be picking up some valuable future assets this off-season.
