Sidney Crosby couldn’t play even with a custom knee brace try, and the Pittsburgh Penguins just felt the floor move under them.

Canada ruled Crosby out for Friday’s Olympic semifinal vs Finland with a lower-body injury.
That alone is rough news. The “brace couldn’t get him through it” part is what sticks in your throat.
When a team is willing to build gear around you on the fly, it usually means they thought there was a path to play.
And when that path still closes, you start thinking the issue is more than pain tolerance.
"This is not good news for the Pittsburgh Penguins."

Elliotte Friedman’s reporting, relayed here, frames it as Canada tried to have a special knee brace made, but it just couldn’t be done.
That’s the kind of detail that makes “day to day” feel like wishful thinking.

Sidney Crosby puts the Pittsburgh Penguins on edge

Penguins fans are going to be uneasy until there’s a real update, because this feels like the kind of injury that lingers.
Crosby has 27-32-59 in the NHL season, and Pittsburgh is 29-15-12. That’s not a roster built to casually absorb a long absence.
It’s not just points. It’s faceoffs, matchup starts, and the way he drags a line into the fight when the legs aren’t there.
Take him out, and suddenly your top-six gets stretched, your man advantage loses its bumper brain, and every close game tilts the other way.
If Canada is holding out hope for Sunday’s gold medal game, that’s fine for them. It doesn’t calm Pittsburgh’s nerves.
The Penguins need Crosby healthy for April, not heroic for one night in February.
This is the moment where “just a tweak” stops sounding believable, and the stretch run starts looking fragile.
