Jason Robertson to Pittsburgh rumors just got very real for Penguins fans

Two separate whispers landed on Tuesday, and they both point the same way, Pittsburgh is circling Jason Robertson if Dallas can't lock him in.

Josh Yohe's read is pretty blunt, an offer sheet route feels dead on arrival because the price in picks is crazy for a star RFA.

But Yohe also suggested he would be stunned if Dubas didn't at least poke around on a trade if the Stars decide they can't bring him back.

The other note is the vibe check, Yohe says the Penguins absolutely love Robertson, and David Pagnotta has said they're keeping tabs on any real availability.

Here's the thing, if you're going to dream, dream on a guy who actually drives a top six and doesn't need perfect conditions to score.

Robertson is 26, drafted in 2017 in the second round, 39th overall, by Dallas, and he's already the type of winger who tilts a game with one shift.

Last season he put up 35 goals, 45 assists, 80 points, and played 17:48 a night, which is heavy usage for a scoring winger.

In the 2025 playoffs he added 4 goals and 2 assists in 11 games, even with his minutes dipping to 15:51.

As a Penguins fan, it's hard not to feel that mix of hope and dread, hope because the fit is obvious, dread because the bill is always brutal.

Dallas knows exactly what it has, and that's why the offer sheet angle is so scary, the whole league builds those compensation tiers to punish you for swinging big.

Robertson is entering the final year of a four year deal with a $7.75 million cap hit, and he's set up to be an RFA when it ends.

That matters because Dallas can keep control, trade him with leverage, or play chicken right into the offseason.

He's also not coasting, in late November he was sitting on 16 goals and 19 assists for 35 points through 26 games, which is the kind of pace that turns contract talks into a headache.

From Pittsburgh's side, the hockey fit is easy to sketch, a left shot finisher who can live on the man advantage and still win pucks at five on five.

Dubas has to weigh timeline too, the Penguins are still hanging around the Metro mix this season, so a move like this can't be just a fantasy, it has to make the lineup better right now.

If Dallas truly opens the door, the Penguins' best pitch is a hockey trade that helps the Stars today, not a futures pile that screams rebuild.
