Daily Faceoff sparked it, but Pittsburgh's 35-20-16 record makes Kyle Dubas' GM case hit like a hammer on March 25.

This would have been unthinkable in October. The Penguins looked old, expensive, and stuck between one last push and a full teardown.
Dubas changed that with targeted bets, not one headline swing. He chased speed, cleaner exits, and steadier work between the pipes.
Anthony Mantha came in on a one-year, $2.5 million deal, a low-risk scoring bet for the middle six after injury. Egor Chinakhov followed with more upside at a $2.1 million cap hit.
Chinakhov is 24, a 2020 first-round pick by Columbus, and the fit is obvious. He gives Pittsburgh another shooter who can attack off the rush instead of waiting for Sidney Crosby to create everything.
You can see why the conversation flipped in one social post.
Then Dubas attacked the crease and blue line. Stuart Skinner arrived at a $2.6 million cap hit through this season, and Samuel Girard brought a $5 million ticket through 2026-27.
Those are not fantasy moves. They are structure moves, the kind that help you survive the next game and stop leaking points in March.

Kyle Dubas changed the Pittsburgh Penguins equation

Fans had every right to doubt this plan early. Right now, doubt looks foolish.
Dubas also protected flexibility. Pittsburgh still owns one of the league's strongest draft-pick piles over the next four years, which matters if this race forces another aggressive summer.
That is the real case for GM of the Year. Dubas did not just save a season, he rebuilt the Penguins' path without blowing up their present.
