Evgeni Malkin wants to stay in Pittsburgh, but Dan Muse and the front office are officially putting contract discussions on ice until the summer.
Kyle Dubas is hitting the brakes. Despite Geno's clear desire to remain a Penguin for life, the organization has decided to freeze all extension talks until the 2025-26 campaign is officially in the books.
It is a bold play for a franchise legend. Malkin is currently skating on the final year of a deal carrying a $6.1 million cap hit, and he is scheduled to hit the open market on July 1.
Usually, a player of his stature gets his business done early. But the Penguins are operating under a different set of rules as they navigate the twilight of their veteran core.
The offensive output suggests he hasn't lost his touch. Over 46 games this season, the big Russian center has racked up 13 goals and 34 assists for a solid 47-point total.
He is currently averaging over a point per game. He also sports a +13 rating, proving he is still a reliable presence when the puck drops against top-tier competition.
Muse relies on him heavily in all situations. Whether it is a power play or a late-game faceoff, No. 71 remains a centerpiece of the tactical blueprint.
A High-Stakes Gamble in Pittsburgh
Why wait? Dubas likely wants to see how the roster handles the grind of a deep playoff run before committing more term to a 39-year-old veteran.
The team is in a respectable spot. With a 32-17-14 record and 78 points through 63 games, they are firmly in the mix for home-ice advantage in the Metropolitan Division.
But the salary cap is always the primary hurdle. Pittsburgh needs flexibility to surround Sidney Crosby with younger legs, and Malkin's next ticket is a massive variable.
Letting a three-time Stanley Cup champion reach free agency is a massive risk. If he hits the market, several contenders would likely jump at the chance to add that experience for a cup run.
Malkin has spent his entire career in the Steel City. The thought of him wearing another sweater is almost impossible for the fan base to stomach.
And yet, the business of hockey is cold. Dubas has shown he isn't afraid to make tough calls, even if they aren't popular in the locker room.
For now, the focus remains on the ice. The Penguins have a real shot at making noise this spring, and they need a focused Malkin to lead the charge.
If this is the beginning of the end, it will be a long, speculative road to July. The ball is in management's court, and the clock is ticking.
