NHL insider Elliotte Friedman revealed that newly acquired Penguins defenseman Brett Kulak could be on his way out a lot sooner than expected.

The Pittsburgh Penguins made a notable move last week, trading goaltender Tristan Jarry to the Edmonton Oilers. One of the key pieces coming back to Pittsburgh in the deal was veteran defenseman Brett Kulak.
Kulak could be a valuable addition to the Penguins' blue line. At his best, the 31-year-old is a smart, reliable defenseman who plays a disciplined game. He showed that last season with the Oilers, recording seven goals and 25 points in 82 games.

What may lead Kyle Dubas to take trade calls on Brett Kulak

However, Kulak is a pending unrestricted free agent, and Pittsburgh already has a crowded defense corps. That raises the question: could he become a trade chip this season? It appears possible.
During a recent appearance on the NHL Network, Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman suggested that the Penguins might consider moving Kulak this campaign.
"I think Kulak is a better player than he's shown this season," Friedman said. "He's had a really rough year. I've always liked him. It will be interesting to see if they flip him for more."

With his playoff experience and dependable play, Kulak could draw interest from teams looking for defensive depth.

Why Brett Kulak could be very valuable to certain teams

He is a strong bottom-pairing defenseman who can kill penalties, making him a solid pickup for a contender aiming to bolster its roster ahead of the postseason.
Could the Oilers circle back closer to the deadline and attempt to re-acquire him? Anything is possible.
For the Penguins, Kulak's presence provides flexibility. They could keep him to strengthen their own lineup or explore trade opportunities to address other needs.
Either way, he is a player who could play an important role this season, whether in Pittsburgh or elsewhere.
