TSN says Kyle Dubas is keeping Erik Karlsson, and Pittsburgh is still carrying a $10 million blue-line bet into next season.

TSN Sports put the decision on the record, and the cap math is the story. Karlsson counts $10 million on Pittsburgh's books because San Jose still holds $1.5 million of his $11.5 million hit.
He is signed through 2026-27, and the next cash trigger is the hinge. The deal carries a $6 million July 1 bonus, then only $1.5 million in salary after that.
That makes this strategy, not sentiment. Dubas is betting a contender may like the player more once the real dollars drop, even if the cap hit still scares people.
Karlsson is also still producing. He has 11-43-54 in 65 games, which keeps him in the picture as a real offensive driver, not a contract parked on the blue line.
The on-ice fit is easy to spot. He still breaks pressure, feeds the weak side fast, and keeps Pittsburgh's man advantage alive when the first look dies.
You can watch Dubas close the door himself, calm voice, flat tone, no daylight for rumor chasers.
The Penguins are 35-19-16, so this is not just summer chatter. Karlsson still changes how dangerous they look from shift to shift.

Erik Karlsson still shapes the Pittsburgh Penguins

Fans are right to feel split here.
The offense jumps when Karlsson has the puck, but this roster still asks him to create and clean up too much in the same shift.
For Pittsburgh's next test on March 24, his first pass and power-play touch still matter. Those are the fastest ways this team gets from scramble to attack.
Karlsson keeps driving offense so Dubas will hopefully look like the smart one here.
