Josh Yohe says the Pittsburgh Penguins want Erik Karlsson and Anthony Mantha back next season, and that turns summer cap math into the real story.

Karlsson is not cheap dead weight. He has 9-43-52 in 63 games, carries an $11.5 million cap hit through 2026-27, and San Jose still retains $1.5 million.
That leaves Pittsburgh with roughly a $10 million bet on a right-shot creator who still drives breakouts and quarterbacks the man advantage. The fit is obvious, the risk sits in the age curve and trade control.
Anthony Mantha is the cleaner file. The 31-year-old winger, drafted in 2013 in Round 1 by the Detroit Red Wings, has 26-27-53 in 68 games on a one-year deal worth $2.5 million.
That is not bottom-six filler. That is real top-six finishing, net-front work, and second-unit power-play value for a team still trying to squeeze offense out of an aging core.
You can feel the shift in the post below. This is not Dubas clearing the deck, this is Dubas telling the room he still sees a path.

Erik Karlsson Forces Pittsburgh Penguins Into A Choice

Fans should read this as a strategy call, not a sentimental one.
Keeping Karlsson means Pittsburgh values puck movement more than cap flexibility. Keeping Mantha means they do not trust the wing market to replace 26 goals at a sane price.
That is the ripple effect. If both stay, the Penguins have less room to patch depth, less margin for a bad contract, and more pressure to win the special-teams battle right away.
This is why Yohe's report matters. It points to a front office that still wants one more serious swing, and now Dubas has to make the numbers match the nerve.
