Penguins use emergency recall on Ville Koivunen, signaling roster instability

Taylor Haase reported Ville Koivunen is back up, and Pittsburgh's cheap, skilled recall says this roster still needs wing help right now.
Koivunen is 22, a 2021 second-round pick by Carolina, and his $805,833 cap hit keeps this move easy on a tight roster.
His entry-level deal expires after this season, so every NHL look matters for Pittsburgh's summer planning as much as Tuesday's lineup card.
This is not about a paper move. It is about speed, touch, and a winger who can keep up if the Penguins need one more offensive body.
Wilkes-Barre sent him into one game after the weekend demotion, and he posted no points, a minus-1, and no shots in Toronto.
You can almost see the front office hedging, one skate, one phone call, one missing forward away from another quick lineup shuffle.
Pittsburgh hosts Colorado on March 24, and the Penguins entered the day 35-19-16 with every point still carrying real playoff weight.
Ville Koivunen tests Pittsburgh Penguins depth again
Fans are right to read this as a stress signal, not just a prospect reward.
Koivunen has 11-22-33 in 29 AHL games, which tells you the hands are there and the reads are getting quicker.
His NHL line is lighter, 2-5-7 in 33 games, but that misses the point of this recall.
The fit is simple. He can play a support role in the top nine, help entries, and make a second power-play unit less static.
That matters because Pittsburgh has leaned on stars for offense all year, and the bottom of the lineup still runs dry too often.
Haase also pointed out the club does not label standard versus emergency recalls, which makes the next morning skate the real tell.
If Koivunen stays, someone is banged up or the staff wants more skill than safety.
If he goes right back down, this was insurance. Either way, Pittsburgh just admitted its wing depth still needs help before the next puck drop.
