Penguins defenseman Caleb Jones was back at practice and on the ice today after he missed the team's last 33 straight games.

Caleb Jones hopped back onto the ice for Pittsburgh's optional morning skate on Thursday, a hopeful moment in his comeback.
The defenseman had been out 33 straight games with a lower-body ailment, leaving a noticeable hole on the Penguins' blue line.

What Caleb Jones did today at practice

He took part in drills at practice and looked smooth and comfortable, sparking optimism that he might re-enter the lineup soon and help steady the team's defense.
Jones had a decent start to the season, playing regularly on Pittsburgh's third pairing after spending most of last season in the minors.

When Caleb Jones got hurt

He was injured in the third period of a win over Florida back in October, and Pittsburgh placed him on injured reserve, shelving him since then.
The 28-year-old is in his first year with the Penguins, having inked a two-year, $1.8 million contract in free agency.
It included a one-way deal despite limited NHL action the prior year. Prior to the injury, Jones played seven of eight games, notching an assist, 15 blocked shots, and 10 hits, while averaging more than 17 minutes per game.
Jones has appeared in 255 career NHL games over parts of eight seasons spanning five teams, often finding a spot as a third-pairing type with some penalty kill work here and there.
The Penguins take to the ice tonight when they face the New Jersey Devils at PPG Paints Arena, with puck drop set for 7 PM ET.
