The Filip Larsson experiment in Pittsburgh is officially dead.

It didn’t take long for the writing to appear on the wall. The Penguins placed the 27-year-old goalie on unconditional waivers yesterday.
And this afternoon, the hammer dropped.
Insider Elliotte Friedman confirmed that Larsson cleared waivers and his contract will be terminated. No trade. No claim. Just a quiet end to a gamble that didn't pay off.
The numbers were ugly.
Larsson posted a porous 3.51 GAA and an .876 save percentage in just nine games with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton this season. You can’t hide those stats. Not when you are fighting for a job in an organization that is suddenly flush with options.
He was a low-risk signing from the SHL, but he couldn't stop a beach ball in the AHL.
The move leaves the Penguins with 46 contracts, opening up flexibility for the deadline. But this isn't just about a roster spot. It's about the pecking order.

The pipeline has no room for passengers

Larsson was blocking the view.
The Penguins have Stuart Skinner and Arturs Silovs locking down the NHL cage. That tandem is set.
Down on the farm, the story is even clearer. The organization needs to feed minutes to the kids who actually matter. Sergei Murashov and Joel Blomqvist are the future. They need the net. They need the reps.
Larsson was just in the way.
He was the odd man out in a game of musical chairs where the music stopped months ago.
Terminating this deal is a mercy kill. It lets Larsson go back to Europe where he can actually play. And it lets Kyle Dubas focus on the guys who might actually wear the Penguins sweater in a playoff game someday.
It was a ruthlessly efficient bit of housekeeping.
And it was the only move to make.
