Pittsburgh Penguins 2016 Cup reunion with Marc Andre Fleury hits January 31.
Ten years is a long time, but that 2016 run still feels like it happened yesterday, especially for fans who lived every shift.
The Penguins have confirmed a pregame ceremony for the 10 year anniversary of the 2016 Stanley Cup team on Saturday, January 31.
That date is not just any night on the calendar, it is a home game against the New York Rangers.
And yes, it is the same Rangers bench now run by Mike Sullivan, the coach who pushed all the right buttons in that 2016 spring.
According to Josh Yohe's post, the guest list is stacked, with Marc Andre Fleury, Pascal Dupuis, Patric Hornqvist, Matt Cullen, Carl Hagelin, Ben Lovejoy, and Chris Kunitz among the names expected.
Yohe also notes Jim Rutherford will be back in Pittsburgh, which adds another layer to a night already dripping with nostalgia.
If you want a quick reminder of how good that team was, Pittsburgh finished 48-26-8 in the 2015-16 regular season and still had another gear when it mattered most.
Marc-André Fleury's 2015-16 line jumps off the page too, 58 games, 35-17-6, and a .921 save percentage, right in the middle of a weird crease era that turned into a Cup.
Pittsburgh Penguins welcome Marc-Andre Fleury back
I can already hear the building getting loud before warmups, because Penguins fans never really stopped loving that guy.
The best part is how that 2016 identity still makes sense today, speed through the neutral zone, pressure on the forecheck, and defensemen who could turn a loose puck into instant offense.
Sidney Crosby was the engine, drafted in 2005 round 1 first overall by Pittsburgh, and he put up 36 G and 49 A for 85 P in 80 games that season.
Kris Letang was a chaos machine on the blue line, drafted in 2005 round 3 62nd overall by Pittsburgh, and he had 16 G and 51 A for 67 P while playing 26:57 a night.
Phil Kessel, drafted in 2006 round 1 5th overall by Boston, gave the lineup that extra punch that let Pittsburgh roll waves instead of just surviving shifts.
Now mash all that history into one Saturday, add a rival sweater on the other bench, and you have the kind of game that can feel bigger than two points.
It is a celebration first, but it is also a reminder of what championship standard hockey looked like in this city, and why so many people still chase that feeling.
