Pittsburgh Penguins mourn passing of former forward on the legendary 'Century Line'

The Penguins are sad to announce the passing of Lowell MacDonald, who was a member of the famous 'Century Line' and won the team's first-ever award.

Former NHL All-Star Lowell MacDonald has passed away at the age of 84. MacDonald played nearly 20 years in the NHL with the Detroit Red Wings, Los Angeles Kings, and Pittsburgh Penguins.
"Lowell played seven seasons with Pittsburgh in the 1970s and was a member of '"The Century Line" with Syl Apps and Jean Pronovost. He won the Bill Masterton Trophy in 1973, becoming the first Penguins player to win an NHL trophy.

Lowell was also the father of Penguins long-time television producer, Lowell MacDonald.

Lowell MacDonald's accomplishments throughout his career

He was a member of the famous 'Century Line' of the Penguins. In 1973, he recorded 75 points for the Penguins and received the Bill Masterton Trophy for perseverance and dedication.
After his NHL career, MacDonald transitioned to coaching at University School of Milwaukee, helping build the program into a Wisconsin high school hockey powerhouse. He coached USM from 1980 to 1997, winning two state championships.
His son, Lane MacDonald, played for USM before becoming the first player from Wisconsin to win the Hobey Baker Award in 1989, leading Harvard as team captain to the NCAA Championship.

Why Lowell MacDonald's influence was also off the ice

MacDonald also influenced a generation of coaches. Wisconsin Hockey Hall of Fame coach Cal Roadhouse began his coaching career thanks to MacDonald's mentorship.
In recognition of his impact, MacDonald was awarded the 2025 John Mariucci Award by the American Hockey Coaches Association, honoring high school coaches who embody the spirit, dedication, and enthusiasm of John Mariucci.
MacDonald left a lasting legacy on hockey in Wisconsin through his playing career, coaching, and mentorship. Condolences go out to the MacDonald family, and may he rest in peace.
