The Pittsburgh Penguins need an injection of young talent, and now, Kyle Dubas and the team have been urged to trade for a young Toronto Maple Leafs forward after a recent development in his contract situation.
This past season, the Pittsburgh Penguins brought in some new, young talent to the NHL level, namely
Rutger McGroarty and
Ville Koivunen, who will both feature in their top-nine moving forward as the Penguins look to keep getting younger.
While they've also drafted well in the past two years, this is a team that still needs some young, NHL ready talent, and now, there's an opportunity for General Manager Kyle Dubas to do business with his former team.
Shortly after word was received that Toronto Maple Leafs forward Nick Robertson was filing for arbitration, the topic of trading him was brought up, with several Penguins fans urging Dubas to push hard to land the 23-year old.
While Robertson hasn't excelled at the NHL level thus far, he's been given a fairly limited role, and in 69 games last season, he posted 15 goals, showing that the potential at the highest level is still there.
With the team likely to move either
Rickard Rakell and/or
Bryan Rust, the framework of a trade could certainly start coming together quickly, and while they'd need to hand Robertson an extension to make the deal work, it could be worthwhile for the Penguins.
Ultimately, Pittsburgh need to keep getting younger after a solid 2025 NHL Draft, and with the team reportedly set to move out two or three veterans, targeting young, NHL ready players makes sense, so don't be surprised if they check in on Robertson in the coming weeks.
