Filip Larsson hits Penguins waivers for contract termination, and Pittsburgh is choosing a clean break over goalie depth.

This is not a "send him to Wilkes Barre" move. It is the paperwork that usually ends with the player walking away.
The waiver wire also had Ryan McAllister and Samuel Johannesson for the same contract-termination purpose.
And yes, Montreal put Sammy Blais on waivers too, but the Penguins piece is the one that matters here.
Larsson is 27, a 2016 sixth-round pick by the Detroit Red Wings.
He signed a two-year deal with a $775,000 cap hit that runs through 2025-26.
So if this goes all the way, Kyle Dubas clears a contract slot and a little cap clutter.
It also tells you Larsson is not in the near-term plan between the pipes.

Filip Larsson and the Pittsburgh Penguins hit reset

Honestly, it feels like the fanbase just wants fewer "mystery goalies" and a clearer depth chart.
Contract termination waivers usually mean the player is heading elsewhere, often to a European deal, instead of riding buses in the AHL.
From the Penguins’ side, it is a small move that can still ripple through roster management.
One extra contract slot matters at the deadline, even if the name is not headline-level.
It also protects the organization from carrying a third or fourth goalie option that is never getting NHL starts.
If Larsson clears, the next domino is figuring out who owns the AHL crease and who becomes the emergency call-up.
Either way, Pittsburgh just made its goalie depth chart a little less crowded, and a lot more honest.
