The Penguins are riding one heck of a hot streak as of late, and it's thanks to one area that struggled in the past, their defensive game.

The Pittsburgh Penguins are hitting their stride at the right time. A six-game winning streak has pushed them back into the thick of the Eastern Conference playoff race, and with key players returning, there's little to suggest this run is a fluke.
The team appears to have resolved its third-period struggles and has bounced back impressively from a rough stretch that threatened to derail the season. Beyond the wins, the Penguins are playing well, executing a process that's producing results.
Forward depth is coming together, the power play continues to click, and the penalty kill looks sharper with Blake Lizotte back in the lineup. Across the board, the Penguins are looking solid.

The Penguins' area of play that stands out the most

What stands out most, though, is their defensive play. Early in the season, Pittsburgh's success often leaned on goaltending and an offense that outpaced what the team allowed.
The numbers showed defensive gaps, especially through the first 10-20 games. That's changing. Over the past 15-25 games, the Penguins have been generating chances while also improving defensively.
"The Penguins are still generating a lot of offense and chances, but they are also doing a significantly better job locking things down on the defensive side."

- Adam Gretz

What has suddenly changed for the Penguins

Where before they might hold opponents in check for 50 minutes, now they're sustaining the process for the full 60. It's the most encouraging development of this winning streak.
It's too early to call Pittsburgh a strong defensive team, and season-long numbers still sit near the middle of the pack. But the trend is clear: the Penguins are improving on the back end, and that progress is a major factor in their recent success.
The team is growing, there's still room to improve, and the direction they're headed makes their current surge all the more promising.
