While all of the attention of the hockey world is in Boston for the Four Nations right now, the league suffered a major loss this week, with Penguins
iconic broadcaster Mike Lange tragically
passing away at the age of 76.
Lange spent decades as the voice of the Penguins, and for many fans, he was the voice of the organization as he oversaw five Stanley Cups during his time as an award winning broadcaster.
After being with the team for so long, it's no surprise that the relationships built with those in the organization, and that includes captain Sidney Crosby, who released a heartfelt statement in the hours after Lange's passing was made public.
Mike made such an impact on the Penguins franchise and me personally as a player. He welcomed me to Pittsburgh. It was the little things like words of encouragement at my stall after the media had left, a fist bump to acknowledge a big game or a wink for a special moment. He was so special and I am honoured to have called Mike my friend.
While some announcers don't endear themselves to the team as well as others, it's clear that Lange engrained himself as a key piece of the Penguins organization, with others like Mario Lemieux also tributing the iconic broadcaster after his passing.
Given how fresh the passing is, the Penguins have not announced any plans to tribute Lange yet, but with it becoming clear how much he meant to the organization, don't be surprised if the organization plans to honour him in some way throughout the rest of the regular season after an incredible run as their broadcaster for decades.
