The NHL has made one major change with their AHL/CHL eligibility, and it could allow Penguins top prospect Ben Kindel a chance to play pro hockey next year.

For years now, CHL players have had to either remain in their respective CHL league or the National Hockey League until they're 20 years of age, with eligibility for the AHL stating a player must be 20-years or older.
Now however, things appear to be changing, with a new rule in the CBA allowing each team one 19-year old to make the jump from the CHL to the AHL, a move that would have benefitted many players in the past few years.

Would Kindel Benefit More From Wilkes-Barre or a Return to the WHL?

While Harrison Brunicke would have benefitted from this rule in 2025/26, he will be forced to crack the NHL roster or make a return to the WHL, but in 2026/27, it will be the perfect opportunity for the Penguins to use this move on Ben Kindel.
Kindel was a star for the WHL's Calgary Hitmen this past season, but with experience still to gain, he will be back with the team in 2025/26 as he looks to continue to develop his game and his physical stature.

Why Dubas May Value AHL Development Control for Pittsburgh's Prospect Pool

Regardless, this move is a game changer for teams moving forward, as it allows young players the chance to play against AHL level players before making the jump to the NHL, something that Kyle Dubas would value given the development control and opportunities.
On top of that, most AHL teams are close to their NHL cities, meaning that this will get the players closer to the organization quicker, with this move likely to benefit the Penguins as much as any team in the NHL.
