Pittsburgh Penguins' defenseman Matt Grzelcyk is set to become a free agent this summer if he's not re-signed, and three teams have emerged as frontrunners.

The Penguins won't be Stanley Cup contenders in 2025-26, regardless of whether Matt Grzelcyk is in their lineup. Grzelcyk simply doesn't impact a team.
He's a good NHL defenseman, but not the player who changes the trajectory of a squad, especially one seeking to win a title.
Penguins GM Kyle Dubas will have to rebuild the team's defense this off-season, a job he'd best be doing unless he's looking to draft one of the top prospects, such as Gavin McKenna, next summer.
Even with complete overhauls, however, odds are the entire blue line won't be rebuilt in one off-season.

Grzelcyk is an unrestricted free agent and could be testing the market

Grzelcyk, who becomes an unrestricted free agent, hasn't had substantial contract talks with the Penguins. Still, Dubas doesn't seem averse to keeping him around.
In case Grzelcyk actually does become a free agent, multiple clubs already are showing interest.
The Blue Jackets could be a probable bidder if they're losing Ivan Provorov. Grzelcyk would give Columbus mobility, power-play material, and would shore up their third pairing.
Winnipeg is a possible destination, too. The Jets are reported to be looking to bolster the left defense, and Grzelcyk's skating ability to distribute the puck and his contribution on special teams would be beneficial to a playoff-type roster.
Chicago makes sense as well. As a rebuilding organization, the Blackhawks would enjoy the veteran leadership of Grzelcyk and the offense he provides. He could assist in directing younger players and improving their transition game.
Grzelcyk's destiny will be determined in the coming weeks, but his presence or absence will not make or break Pittsburgh's fortunes.
