Following Penguins practice today, head coach Dan Muse had nothing but praise for Sergei Murashov, which could alter the team's goaltending strategy going forward.

Pittsburgh Penguins coach Dan Muse was grinning Friday morning as he addressed media members prior to the team's final preseason game against the Buffalo Sabres at PPG Paints Arena.
But he also let loose with a bombshell: rather than Tristan Jarry getting to play a complete game, as is customary for the preseason finale, Jarry will share time with top prospect Sergei Murashov.
"He's obviously had a very strong camp, and he's young. It's good to see a young player like that who's pushing as hard as he is, who's as competitive as he is, and dedicated as he is."

Murashov, only 21, has been one of the most impressive stories for the Penguins this fall. In under an hour of preseason play, he has saved shots at a .941 rate, showcasing athleticism and poise.

Sergei Murashov has Been Spectacular Playing in High-Pressure Situations

His initial game had him saving 17 of 18 against Montreal, remaining calm under pressure. He then played well in last weekend's "Marc-Andre Fleury" tribute game, saving 12 of 13 before leaving after two periods.
The timing is intriguing. General manager Kyle Dubas brought in Arturs Silovs during the offseason in hopes that he'd have a more extensive runway to develop as a strong NHL goaltender.
Silovs played strongly versus Detroit but struggled versus Columbus, surrendering two long-distance goals, the same inconsistency that tagged along with him in Vancouver and Abbotsford.
Murashov, on the other hand, still looks like he's racing ahead of schedule. What was initially promoted as another preseason tryout is fast emerging as something greater. At least, the rookie goalie is earning some quality NHL experience.
At best, he might be inserting himself into an even larger discussion and putting pressure on the Penguins' depth chart sooner than anyone would have imagined.
Either way, tonight's shared wrinkle will give more insight into what shapes up to be an intriguing storyline as the season begins.
