Utah HC not allowed to be home team for special events after signing deal
Utah Hockey Club has officially made a longer commitment than the Arizona Coyotes were ever able to signing a 30 year deal to stay in Salt Lake City.
Ryan Smith, the owner of the Utah Hockey Club and the Utah Jazz, is nearing a deal with Salt Lake City that would keep both teams at the Delta Center for the next 30 years. The deal would provide $900 million in public funding for renovations to the Delta Center and the development of a sports and entertainment district in the surrounding area.
As part of the agreement, the Utah Hockey Club and the Utah Jazz would face significant fines if they were to play a home regular season game anywhere else. However, if either team were to participate in an outdoor game in Utah or play abroad, they could avoid fines by being designated as the away team, similar to a deal between the New York Rangers and Madison Square Garden.
"Jazz and Utah Hockey Club owner Ryan Smith is close to finalizing a deal with Salt Lake City that would see the teams be required to play all of their home games in the Delta Center «for the next 30 years or face significant penalties," according to a front-page piece by Gehrke & Miller of the SALT LAKE TRIBUNE. In exchange for $900M in public financing to "renovate the arena and develop a three-block sports and entertainment district,"" Sports Business Journal said.
It's great to see how committed Ryan Smith is to Utah Hockey Club and that he wants to build a sustainable future for the franchise in the state. This is something that Alex Meruelo was not able to do during his time as the owner of the now-dissolved Arizona Coyotes.
