Recently signed by the Vancouver Canucks, Daniel Sprong had envisioned a different trajectory for his offseason but ultimately agreed to a one-year, $975,000 contract with the team. Despite the delay in securing a team, Sprong had numerous suitors vying for his signature. A pivotal conversation with Canucks head coach Rick Tocchet, a former colleague, significantly influenced his decision.
In his first media appearance since joining Vancouver, Sprong disclosed that a phone call from Tocchet, who was an assistant coach during Sprong's rookie year with the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2015-16, convinced him to choose the Canucks.
Sprong, 27, had an impressive season with the Detroit Red Wings last year, tallying 18 goals and 43 points despite averaging only 12:00 in ice time. Known for his scoring prowess, Sprong has struggled to earn the trust of his coaches, reflected in his limited ice time. His career-high came during the 2022-23 season with the Seattle Kraken, where he recorded 21 goals and 46 points while averaging just 11:25 on the ice.
With an established rapport with Tocchet, Sprong is hopeful for a change in his playing time dynamics. The Amsterdam native's previous bond with Tocchet might provide the stability and trust needed for more consistent ice time.
Sprong also has existing relationships with some of his new teammates. He is good friends with Elias Pettersson, whom he met on vacation, and has kept in touch with Jake DeBrusk, a fellow draftee from the same class. This familiarity could help form a potent line for Vancouver next season, potentially transforming the team's offensive capabilities.
