Alexander Ovechkin has been starring in the NHL for so long, and ahead of a matchup with Sidney Crosby, he's revealed what his future in the league holds.
"It shows lots of respect. If something happens with him, he breaks a record, I'm always texting him, saying, 'Congrats, man. Keep going.' Same with him."
Ovechkin wasn't the only one to pass a Wayne Gretzky record this season however, as Crosby tallied his 20th season in the NHL at a point-per-game or better, and after stating he was aware of Crosby's record, Ovi reveals how special it is for both.
"It's pretty cool. Came to the League at the same time. To break those records, yeah, it's pretty special."
Unsurprisingly, the question then came up about Ovechkin's future in the NHL and how special it would be to play Crosby one last time, and he then confirmed that he's not retiring after the 2024/25 season, despite being 39-years of age.
Crosby isn't going anywhere either, and after so long in the league, Ovechkin was asked about how they've both been able to stay at such a high level, to which he laughed and responded with this:
"When we came into the league... it was a different system, different style of game. Two decades, we kind of transform ourselves to stay at the same level, and show that yeah, we're pretty good players [laughs]."
Ultimately, both men are going to retire from the NHL one day, and when that day comes it will be a very sad one for an entire generation of fans, but for now, this likely isn't going to be their last encounter.
