Canadian league takes first steps to try to ban fighting
Today, new rules were released by one of the CHL's 3 leagues. The Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL), made the announcement they officially banned fighting. The new rules apply for the 2023-24 season.
Section 4 of the updated QMJHL's rules, which deals with fighting, now state anyone who fights will be immediately ejected from a game and will face supplementary discipline after that. The rules also apply to any members of a team who aren't players.
The league shared thY this was coming months ago following a request from the Quebec government. The government wanted to try and curb violence in the league. The government believed rhag careers are being cut short and players are suffering life-long injuries after getting into fights.
Of the three major junior leagues in Canada (QMJHL, OHL, WHL), the QMJHL had the lowest incidents of fighting the past few seasons.
