Every so often, a player crosses the line of competitive and physical hockey and finds himself facing supplementary discipline. Last night was the NHL's opening night, including a feature matchup including the Stanley Cup Champion Vegas Golden Knights. Brett Howden was a part of the ceremony, but now likely won't appear with the team for a few more games.
Early in the third period, Howden was crossing through the neutral zone when he delivered a blindsided hit to the head of Seattle forward Brandon Tanev. The hit clearly made contact with Tanev's head, shaking him up, but also made him fall awkwardly on his leg, and leave the ice in clear discomfort.
The officials on ice reviewed the play, and assessed Howden a game misconduct and a match penalty. The biggest offence of the play was the clear contact to Tanev's head, but also, Tanev was no where near the puck when the hit was made. Tanev left the game and did not return.
Whether it be with concussion symptoms or the awkward land on his leg, hopefully Tanev doesn't miss much time as an important player for the Seattle Kraken. For now, Howden will likely receive the first suspension of the year.
