Josh Yohe says Nikolaj Ehlers hurt his right knee, and a Metro race already felt the shock because Carolina's $8.5 million winger changes everything.

Yohe had the read first. That matters, because Ehlers has been one of Carolina's pure speed drivers all season.
Ehlers is in Year 1 of a six year, $51 million deal. He came into Tuesday with 20-30-50 in 63 games.
For Pittsburgh, the detail that jumps out is Erik Karlsson was involved in the sequence. That is the kind of moment fans instantly replay, especially with Karlsson's $11.5 million cap hit and full no-move clause still hanging over every roster debate.
Karlsson has still produced, with 6-36-42 in 58 games, but every defensive touch gets judged harder because the contract runs through 2026-27.
That is why this play lands bigger than one scary collision. It touches the standings, the eye test, and the Penguins' summer cap conversation all at once.

Erik Karlsson just fueled another Penguins argument

A lot of Penguins fans can live with Karlsson freelancing when the points follow, but not when a dangerous rush ends with a star opponent crumpled up.
Pittsburgh entered Tuesday at 32-17-14, chasing Carolina at 40-17-6 in the Metro. Losing Ehlers would rip speed and transition out of a contender the Penguins are trying to catch.
That's fine if you're a Penguins fan, but you never want a player to get hurt. You also don't want any negative attention put upon Karlsson.
From a hockey angle, Ehlers stretches coverage wide and forces defensemen to turn. If Carolina loses that gear, the Hurricanes become easier to stack at the blue line.
That is the twist for Pittsburgh. A brutal moment for Carolina could also sharpen the Penguins' path in this game and keep Karlsson at the center of every big picture conversation heading toward the summer.
