Former Two-Time Stanley Cup Champion Has His Contract Terminated
Gemel Smith, a familiar face from the Tampa Bay Lightning's back-to-back cup victories, is parting ways with his current KHL team as they mutually terminate his contract.
The 29-year-old forward, despite not being a standout player, played a role in the Lightning's consecutive championship wins in 2020 and 2021. Smith sought more playing time with the Detroit Red Wings after his stint with the Lightning but opted to go overseas when that plan didn't materialize.
His venture into the KHL with Dinamo Minsk saw limited success, recording five points in 15 games.
Drafted in the fourth round of the 2012 NHL Entry Draft by the Dallas Stars, Smith has faced challenges establishing a solid presence in the league. His journey involves a constant shuffle between the AHL and the NHL, struggling to secure a stable spot on any team.
With a career-high of 46 games in a single season with the Dallas Stars, Smith, now a free agent, embarks on another search for a new team to call home.
