Insider reveals how much money Mitch Marner could ask for in his negotiations with the Maple Leafs
Yesterday the Toronto Maple Leafs and their fan base celebrated the signing of Auston Matthews to a 4-year contract extension. However, because it's Toronto, fans can only enjoy things for so long.
Today on a brand new episode of the 32 Thoughts Podcast, Elliotte Friedman and Jeff Marek spoke about Matthews new contract. Matthews deal, a short term deal for a league record $13.25M, sets the market for one of his teammates next deal. According to Friedman Marner is likely going to seek comparable pay to Matthews deal.
What is Marner's next number? Because he was the closest one to Matthews. When Matthews signed for 11.634 AAV all the sudden Marner became close to an $11M player, so now Matthews' number is 13.25, what's Marner's number? Is it 13.249999?
Marner is currently heading into the second last year of his current contract, will be eligible for a new deal next summer. However, it's hard to believe that Brad Treliving will be interested in entertaining a circus similar to what Marner and his camp put the Leafs through during his last negotiation.
