NHL Addresses Allegations Regarding Rigged Games In Favour Of Toronto
Recently, the Toronto Maple Leafs, Ottawa Senators, Detroit Red Wings, and Minnesota Wild headed to Stockholm, Sweden for the National Hockey League's Global series. Fans were curious about how the league decided the home and away teams, especially why Toronto ended up with two away games.
Amid claims from fans that the schedule seemed unfair and the series might be rigged in favor of the Maple Leafs, Twitter user @PragueSenator highlighted the perceived imbalance:
"The 'fair' schedule of #NHLGlobalSeries... While playing against tired teams, the Leafs will be able to bring in more revenue as well as get the most rest."
Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman weighed in, explaining that the NHL has to compensate a team that loses a home game, making it more feasible to cut a check for Ottawa instead of Toronto.
«Friedman says that when it comes to the global series, the league is basically robbing and has to pay for a home game's gate. You'll notice that Ottawa had 2 Home games while Toronto had 2 away games simply because the NHL found it easier to cut a check with Ottawa #GoSensGo«
Given the Maple Leafs' status as one of the most valuable franchises, it makes sense that it would be simpler to make a deal with Ottawa. This also clarifies why the league opted not to give the Leafs a home game, considering Ottawa's games don't always sell out, and the lower ticket values make cutting that check much more straightforward.
