NHL Franchise Will Be The First Pro Sports Team With Anthem Sung in Punjabi
The Winnipeg Jets are gearing up for their second annual South Asian Heritage Night presented by Canada Life on Saturday, Dec. 16, at 6 p.m. as they go head-to-head with the Colorado Avalanche.
This event is set to embrace Manitoba's vibrant South Asian community with a blend of food, music, dance, and art.
In a noteworthy move, the Amber Trails School choir, primarily consisting of South Asian students, is set to perform both the American national anthem and a Punjabi and English rendition of O Canada. This marks a significant moment as it will be the first time the Canadian national anthem is sung in Punjabi at a major professional sports event, "reflecting the growing significance of Punjabi as Canada's third most spoken language," as stated by the Winnipeg Jets.
Leading up to the game, DJs with South Asian roots, like DJ Hira, will be spinning Punjabi music. Beyond the beats, the celebration extends to culinary delights with various South Asian-inspired dishes available at concession stands. From classic butter chicken and saag paneer bowls to unique tandoori chicken pizza and the delightful sweet treat, gulab jamun, fans can savor the flavors of South Asian cuisine.
This event not only shines a spotlight on the rich cultural diversity of the South Asian community but also underscores the Jets' commitment to inclusivity, recognizing the significance of Canada's multicultural fabric.
The historic moment of singing the Canadian national anthem in Punjabi adds an extra layer of significance to an evening dedicated to celebrating unity in diversity.
