As training camps around the NHL reach a midway point, teams will begin to cut down their roster sizes to shape up their opening day lineups. The best tool for doing so is waivers, which was wildly active today.
Seven players were waived on Thursday afternoon, including a former first round draft pick in Ty Smith, currently with the Pittsburgh Penguins. Xavier Ouellet and Rem Pitlick were also waived by the Penguins, all recently acquired from the Montreal Canadiens. Finally of significance, the Canucks waived goaltender Spencer Martin, who was used for much of last season to poor results while Thatcher Demko was injured. Every player will be available to every team in the NHL for the next 24 hours, with the order claim chain giving priority to the 2022-23 standings in reverse. The Anaheim Ducks will have first claim to these players.
