Tragic news hits the hockey community as former NHLer passes away
On Saturday, former Pittsburgh Penguins forward Adam Johnson suffered a severe injury when an opponent's skate blade struck him in the neck during a hockey game.
This unfortunate incident took place midway through the game when Sheffield Steelers defenseman Matt Petgrave collided with one of Johnson's teammates, causing him to lose balance and kick his leg up into the air.
As a result, Petgrave's skate made contact with Johnson's neck, leading to profuse bleeding on the ice.
The Nottingham Panthers of the Elite Ice Hockey League swiftly declared a "major medical emergency," prompting over 8,000 fans at the Sheffield Arena to evacuate the building. The game was also immediately halted due to the distressing incident.
Tragically, it has been confirmed that Johnson lost his life at the young age of 29. Members of Johnson's family and his hometown community in Hibbing, Minnesota, have begun sharing their condolences on social media.
Additionally, Pittsburgh Penguins reporter Rob Rossi posted a black and white photo of Adam Johnson without a message.
This is indeed devastating news, and our thoughts go out to those who were hoping for a better outcome in this tragic situation.
