Coming off of speculation of trade and rumoured trade requests from both players, as well as the Jets falling short of the playoffs last year, these signings come as a massive surprise. While some believed the Jets would be re-tooling this season, this is a massive showing of faith into their existing core.
Scheifele is a critical offensive player for the Jets, and their first draft selection since returning to Winnipeg. In 81 games last season, Scheifele recorded an impressive 42 goals and 68 points. Connor Hellebuyck is arguably the most important Jet, being one of the most lauded goaltenders in the league. In an incredible last season, Hellebuyck posted a 2.49 GAA and .920 save percentage in 64 appearances.
These signings show the Jets have an insurmountable faith in their existing core being able to compete for the Stanley Cup. With a shored up offence including Scheifele backed by the elite goaltending in Hellebuyck, the Jets have some critical positions filled to fare well in the playoffs, despite the recent failures.
