One hockey player dead and 3 others injured in tragic weekend fire
Tragic Cottage Fire in Prince Edward Island Claims Life of Hockey Player, Injures Three Others
A weekend trip to a cottage in Prince Edward Island has ended in tragedy for the local hockey community. One player lost his life in the blaze, while three others sustained injuries, some of them reportedly serious.
According to a news release from police in Cavendish, PEI, officers arrived at the scene around 5:40 AM on Monday to find the cottage "fully engulfed in flames." The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
"Three people who escaped the fire were injured, one with serious injuries. Once the fire was extinguished by the fire departments, human remains of one person were discovered inside. The scene was held by the RCMP and the investigation is ongoing."
While police did not release any names, the Cole Harbour Colts of the Nova Scotia Junior Hockey League (NSJHL) confirmed that one of their team members, Noah Latimer, was killed in the fire.
"Your Capstone Colts are absolutely devastated to hear of the passing of Noah Latimer. In Noah's short time with the Colts he made an immediate impact on the organization, being the ultimate teammate and even received the playoff MVP award for the Colts. Our thoughts and prayers are with Noah's family, teammates, and friends at this very difficult time. Latsy will be sincerely missed by so many and always remembered,"
The Truro Bearcats of the Maritime Hockey League also confirmed that all four involved were past members of their team.
"We are absolutely heartbroken to hear about the tragic accident involving 4 of our alumni this past weekend resulting in the loss of one of our own. Noah Latimer played parts of 2 seasons with the Bearcats in 2021/22 and 2022/23. Rest easy 22, forever in our hearts."
Latimer, born and raised in Halifax, Nova Scotia, played most of his hockey in Nova Scotia and some in New Brunswick. Since the 2021-22 season, he had played in both the NSJHL and the MHL for teams in East Hants, Brookfield, Truro, Grand Falls, and Cole Harbour.
Our sincere condolences go out to the family and friends of Noah Latimer. Our thoughts are also with the three other players involved in this tragic incident.
