Pittsburgh Penguins' division rival places 24-year-old centerman on waivers
The New York Rangers have placed 24-year-old centerman Juuso Parssinen on waivers today, giving teams 24 hours to put in a claim.
Parssinen was acquired in the Jimmy Vesey and
Ryan Lindgren trade to Colorado, which was the second time he had been traded in about as many months that season.
What Juuso Parssinen's mediocre numbers looked like
Parssinen was never truly impressive with the Rangers, putting up two goals, three assists, and five points in 11 games last season and just two goals, one assist, and three points in 14 games this year. He was simply never a fit with the Blueshirts.
Despite what many think, Parssinen was not the "haul" in the Lindgren/Vesey trade. The draft picks were the real prize, and Parssinen was just a body to make the trade numbers work.
It was interesting that Chris Drury re-signed him to a two-year contract last offseason, given his very average numbers, especially for a $1.25 million cap hit. The Rangers likely explored trade situations before placing him on waivers, but no one flinched.
Why New York had to place Juuso Parssinen on waivers
New York had to do something quickly, as it needed cap and roster space to welcome back Will Borgen, who will likely be taken off the injured reserve list at some point tomorrow after Parssinen clears waivers or gets claimed by a team seeking youth.
JT Miller should also be returning to the lineup, meaning the Rangers have extra bodies at the forward position and don't need Parssinen around anymore. Parssinen is still young at 24, and many teams may find that very tempting.
