Team pulls trade offer after hearing Rutger McGroarty's demands
Rutger McGroarty, a promising first-round draft pick for the Winnipeg Jets, has been the center of attention in the hockey world recently, though not for the best reasons. Selected 14th overall in the 2022 NHL Entry Draft, McGroarty has yet to play an NHL game but is already making waves with his trade demands.
According to Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet, McGroarty has expressed a desire to be traded from the Jets, believing his path to the NHL would be smoother with another organization. Reports suggest that McGroarty is seeking guaranteed ice time in the NHL, without the possibility of playing in the minors.
The demands made by McGroarty and his representatives have apparently been a stumbling block for potential trades. Mike McIntyre of the Winnipeg Free Press reported that a trade involving McGroarty was nearly completed this past weekend but fell apart due to the demands from McGroarty's camp.
"I've heard over this past weekend there may have been one particular deal that was pretty close to happening that essentially fell apart because the other team didn't like that they were hearing either from the McGroarty camp.
The general consensus is, yeah, there's a sense of entitlement there that has obviously led to issues with the Jets...I think it's also leading to potential issues with other teams and potential trade partners."
McGroarty, a 20-year-old Nebraska native, moved to Michigan as a teenager to join the United States National Team Development Program. He has represented the USA twice at the World Juniors, serving as team captain during his second appearance and winning a gold medal. McGroarty has also had two standout seasons with the University of Michigan, tallying 91 points in 75 games.
While his talent is undeniable, McGroarty's demands for guaranteed NHL ice time are proving to be a major hurdle. As he looks to transition from NCAA hockey to the professional ranks, finding a team willing to meet his conditions may be challenging. The Jets and other potential trade partners will need to navigate these demands carefully as they consider his future in the NHL.
