The Calgary Flames have made a significant move by sending defenseman Chris Tanev over to the Dallas Stars.

According to Pierre LeBrun, the trade is nearly finalized, while Frank Seravalli adds that Calgary will receive a second-round pick, a promising prospect, and a conditional pick in return for Tanev.

The Stars, who are aiming high in the Western Conference, have been on the lookout for a top-four defenseman to strengthen their squad for a deep playoff run, making them a prime candidate in the chase for Tanev.

The main sticking point in trading Tanev had always been his high market value. Flames GM Craig Conroy had been clear, signaling to interested parties that a first-round pick was the starting point for negotiations. However, such an offer hadn't materialized.

The Flames reportedly passed on a proposal from the Toronto Maple Leafs, which lacked the coveted first-round pick. Instead, Leafs GM Brad Treliving had hoped to secure Tanev with a package of lower-round selections.

This deal is likely to stir up some disappointment among the Leafs' faithful and the team's management, who were keen on adding Tanev to their lineup.
