Elliotte Friedman appeared on the 32 Thoughts podcast today to get into details as to why the trade between the Oilers and Penguins for Tristan Jarry fell apart.

Over the last few days, there has been a lot of speculation regarding the Edmonton Oilers getting closer to acquiring Tristan Jarry from the Pittsburgh Penguins.
However, NHL insider Elliotte Friedman cleared the air on this in his most recent update, suggesting that things are not as cut and dry as they appear.

What Elliotte Friedman said about the whole situation on his latest podcast

On the latest 32 Thoughts episode, Friedman explained that Edmonton is indeed eyeing Jarry, yet their business model is a strict dollar-in/dollar-out operation. To pull this off, they'd need to overhaul the roster in a big way.
The plan was to pair Jarry with Stuart Skinner, but the deal has hit a snag because Pittsburgh won't take on or retain any salary. Friedman described it as a very hard trade to do right now.
"On the Jarry to EDM talk, they are interested but are also a dollar in/dollar out team & would need roster surgery to do it. The goal was to pair him w/ Skinner. Deal has died off because PIT won't retain on Jarry. Very hard trade to do right now."

Edmonton's interest isn't new, but a one-for-one swap with Skinner isn't enough. Ideally, the Oilers would like both goalies to share duties, which only raises the degree of difficulty.

Why Edmonton may need to look elsewhere for a goalie

With the situation now tangled for Jarry, Edmonton may have to take a look elsewhere. Several goalies could fit financially and logistically better.
Potential names include the Buffalo duo of Alex Lyon or Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen and Columbus' Elvis Merzlikins, who hasn't locked down a steady starting role this season.
Another workable route could be promoting Connor Ingram from the AHL Bakersfield Condors, which means moving Calvin Pickard and adjusting the salary cap. That path could steady the crease without the headaches of a blockbuster trade.
At this point, the chances of Edmonton landing Jarry appear slim, and it seems the Oilers will have to get a little creative to solve their goaltending puzzle.
