Arizona Coyotes face new hurdle as team gets bad news about the auction
We will learn the outcome of Alex Meruelo's property offer in Phoenix later this month, which aims to build a new arena and attract the Coyotes back to Arizona.
Though there are still more than two weeks until the land sale, Meruelo seems to be up against some competition, which may make it harder for him to win the land and possibly save the Coyotes.
Alex Meruelo is one of the four buyers who have already registered for the land auction on June 27th, according to former NHLPA consultant Richard Rodier. Thus, in order to win the land sale and maybe lure the Coyotes back, Meruelo will have to outbid the other three parties.
"Sources: the June 27 land auction in Phoenix already has 4 bidders registered including Meruelo. That means there will be at least 3 bidders against Meruelo, and maybe more as there is still plenty of time for others to register. Should be interesting." Rodier said.
Back when the NHL moved the Coyotes' players and staff to Utah to form a new franchise, they granted Alex Meruelo a five-year window to bring back Arizona as an expansion team, if he was able to prove himself and build an arena up to their standards.
It may be difficult for the Arizona Coyotes to return given the competition he will face in the land auction and the possibility of more bidders registering in the next few days, but Alex Meruelo will stop at nothing to bring the NHL back to that market.
