Carolina Hurricanes Goaltender Has Been Placed On Waivers After Brutal Loss
The sports scene can be tough, and it looks like Antti Raanta, the seasoned goalie, got a harsh dose of reality this Saturday. According to NHL insider Elliotte Friedman, the Carolina Hurricanes decided to place the 34-year-old goalie on waivers.
Raanta hasn't had the best season for the Hurricanes, with a 3.61 goals against average and a .854 save percentage over 14 games. Friday night was a rough one, facing the Nashville Predators and letting in 6 goals on 30 shots, giving him an .800 save percentage. This less-than-stellar performance cost the Hurricanes the game, despite scoring 5 goals themselves.
While there are teams in the NHL looking for a goalie boost, it remains to be seen if they'll see Raanta as a viable option. Beyond his struggles this season, he's carrying a $1.5 million cap hit on a 1-year deal. Any team claiming him off waivers would need to sacrifice valuable cap space for the move.
If Raanta clears waivers on Sunday, it's likely he might find himself in the American Hockey League. Tough break for the veteran netminder.
