Current Penguins Forward Unexpectedly Traded in Overseas League

Back in the 2020 NHL Draft, the Carolina Hurricanes used a second round draft pick on Russian forward Vasily Ponomarev, who has become quite the intriguing young prospect for the Pittsburgh Penguins.

In 2024/25, he made his Penguins debut in the NHL, appearing in seven games, but for most of the season, he led the way for the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, showing great flashes with 15 goals and 41 points in 55 games played at that level.

That's led many to believe he could have a significant role in the NHL next season, making the latest report out of Russia and the KHL involving Ponomarev even more surprising.

According to reports, his rights in the KHL were traded from Spartak to Avangard Omsk, even though he has not played in Russia since 2021/22, as he has been in the AHL and the NHL since then.

In a further twist, Avangard's GM reportedly expects him to play for the team at some point, despite the fact that the 23-year old could see an increased role moving forward, with the potential to play in the NHL full-time in 2024/25.

This comment suggests that they may know something we don't, and while he is currently an RFA, there's plenty of optimism for his talent and how well it could translate in North America at the top level.

After a very productive AHL season, it's not hard to see why the Pittsburgh Penguins are excited about the future of Ponomarev, and even with his undersized frame at 5-foot-10, the talent to be an NHLer is there, so despite this trade, don't expected to see him back in the KHL anytime soon.
