The Carolina Hurricanes have been very interested in acquiring Erik Karlsson, but Kyle Dubas has to retain a lot of his salary, which is causing a deal to collapse.
The Hurricanes are in rumors surrounding Erik Karlsson, but his $10 million salary hit is a significant deterrent.
Retention in salary can be involved in a trade, though Chris Johnston reported in a Steve Dangle Podcast post that there isn't any intent by GM Kyle Dubas at the moment to retain a percentage of Karlsson's salary.
It could be a greater likelihood closer to the trade deadline in March 2026. Karlsson also possesses a no-movement clause, with his full veto authority over a trade.
Bryan Rust and Rickard Rakell are also in a ton of trade rumors right now
At the same time, 'Pittsburgh Hockey Now' also reports there is a steep price being put on Bryan Rust and Rickard Rakell from GM Dubas. Rust, in reports, is being targeted for a first-round pick plus a high-upside player.
For Rakell, a B+ asset, a late first/early second-round pick, with a depth NHL guy, are being targeted. Teams listed in the market for these players are Calgary, Detroit, Los Angeles, Buffalo, and Toronto.
Whether it occurs in the summer or up until the deadline, there's a massive Penguins trade in store, but Dubas is going to have to be a bit flexible.
