Pittsburgh Penguins forward Evgeni Malkin could be in trouble with the NHL Department of Player Safety after his slash on Sabres defenseman Rasmus Dahlin.

Pittsburgh Penguins forward Evgeni Malkin could soon find himself in trouble with the National Hockey League Department of Player Safety because of his actions during tonight's game against the Buffalo Sabres.

Evgeni Malkin ejected for slash against the Buffalo Sabres

He got into it with Sabres captain Rasmus Dahlin and then delivered a vicious slash out of anger near his head just feet away from the on-ice referee, resulting in a five minute major penalty and a game misconduct.
Because he was ejected because of a violent action on the ice, the NHL DPS will automatically review the incident.
So far this year, which is the last of his current contract, Malkin has 47 points (13G, 34A).
Now, all eyes will be on the Department of Player Safety to determine whether further discipline is needed for Malkin. So far in his career, he's been suspended twice and fined three times for on-ice infractions.

Evgeni Malkin Is In The Last Year Of His Contract

Even though it seemed like the two sides were headed for a split, ex-Penguins GM Ron Hextall was able to sign Malkin to a multi-year extension in 2022.
There was plenty of speculation about Malkin potentially leaving Pittsburgh for another team or even in retirement after this year is over, though Malkin has made it clear he has no intention of playing for another team.
Malkin, who was taken with the second overall pick in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft, one pick behind fellow Russian Alex Ovechkin of the divisional foe Washington Capitals, has 1,393 points (527G, 866A) in 1,258 games.
